arriving at Buenos Aires

We are just at the mouth of the River Plate. We have a had a second full day at sea and seem to be rushing from one activity to another. We did manage to get a lie in today which is rare we didn't get up 'til 9ish but since then it has been go go go. We went to a presentation on Uraguay and Montevideo. We then set off on our mile walk around the deck, this was followed by swimming and a soak in the hot tub. We had a quick snack on the Lido and then dashed down to join the daily quiz session. There are so many attending these there were no chairs left when we got there, late as usual. We went from the quiz to a tango lesson which was hilarious. there is much talk about tango as everyone is planning to go to a tango show once they reach BA. We then went off for "English high tea" at the restaurant on board and were persuaded to attend a bingo session. Bill and I stuck it for 10 minutes then left it wasn't really our thing!

By this time I was ready for a rest, Bill went off to download some more photos on to the spaces live website and I went to our "stateroom" as they are grandly called to grab a quick siesta.

We have 2 days in BA and look forward to exploring the place as everyone speaks very highly of it. I particularly want to visit La Boca the arty area and we hope to enjoy the local food and fit in a tango demonstration. Will keep you posted, love to you all, Val x

  1. Well, I just posted to what I thought was yesterday's entry about the Falkland Islands. It seemed to go through. Can't find it now.
In the meantime, Val's comment was posted as the fourth one to that entry and mine seems to be in space.....not unusual for me, I guess.

So, why not "Last Tango in Buenos Aires" ala Bill and Val? Go for it. Have great fun. Wish we were with you.

Just watched a brief video on the Falkland Islands (yeah for Google) and I agree with Bill... I'd rather be on the mainland. Nice enough, but seemed a bit isolated. Lots of penguins.
    Love,
    Jim and Pat

  3. Too funny! Would love to see a vid of Dad trying out the Tango...LMAO!

Anyway, make sure to check out Sant Elmo if you want to see Tango dancers. Boca is well-nice too: some colorful houses, as I remember but it's right next to Boca Juniors footy stadium (a bit of a dodgy area...don't waltz off aimlessly, as I know Dad likes to do).

We also hopped on the train to Tigre for an afternoon (coast) which was really nice too. Train station is right next to a Memorial for those soldiers lost in Las Malvinas.

Also, you're probably better off saying you're Dutch or Scandinavian or something. There are still a lot of radicals who hate the Brits and you'll see plenty of Malvinas Argentinas graffiti - esp if you get lost near the Boca Juniors stadium :-)

Best cut of meat: Bife Chorizo. Although given the state of the cattle industry these days in Argentina it might not be up-to-scratch. Still, if you order one, be prepared not to fit anything else on the plate and take a doggy bag to help feed the local quiltros afterwards. Given your experience in Santiago, it sounds like they gravitate towards you anyway...he, he, he...

C had a great birthday yesterday. Can't believe he is 3 already. He insisted on wearing a cape all day and being called Super Calum! He kept repeating "To The Rescue!" although I don't think he rescued much. I recorded the "Celebration Of Life" ceremony from his Montessori school and put it on my Facebook page if you want to check it out...you can also see him playing with your rocket pressie at home with a very pregnant Shana.

Keep on having fun! And remember, you're Dutch (nobody will talk to you in Dutch anyway so it's a safe bet).

    Love,

    Dncn

  4. Great photos, and great to be reliving my '97 trip through SA and The Falklands. Thanks for all the effort (and humour) keeping the blog going. AND just watch out for those sneaky motor cycle bag snatchers in BA. Cheers, Michael

Love the photos, so nice to see blue skies, bikini bottoms and Bill looking a bit German with his beach towel.
Enjoy the tango-ing, maybe you can teach us how when you get back - it looks just the thing for Ron!

  8. Hi Pads,

Am loving the photo's, especially the ones that look like they've been taken after a few drinks where Mum is cuddling the towel arrangements! Tried to copy 1 to put on our spare bed for our next visitors (probably you) but mine looked more like a, well, more like a messy towel really. Anyway, am sure your amazing holiday should be inspiring me in a lot more useful ways than that!
Sounds like you're getting to know lots of people, you'll have to organise a ship reunion, maybe at Harewood House! It all sounds brilliant, I bet you're glad you didn't send Dad off on his own now Mum!
All good here, Bertie been checking in his little Atlas to see where you are regularly. He reckons he's taken the same route when he went round the world in a submarine (he's got a very vivid imagination!) Harry's doing fine too, has become a bit too attached to his yellow bobble hat recently and is insisting on wearing it on every outting, am hoping this obsession passes before we go to Vejer!
Not long 'til you're back in sunny Baildon now, enjoy it all while it lasts!
    Love you,
    Abs & da boyz x

  11. Hi Val and Brad
Bet you thought we hadn't returned from Vejer. Great week but I was the water bird again.(tell all when we meet).
Sorry we haven't been in touch.Had a mega week and have just enjoyed a saturday morning lie in with my laptop and reading it all through word for word!! Your trip sounds fantastic, but please keep Bill out of shop doorways with tango dancers (especially if he is going through his Brad phase). I liked him better as the VB.He is much better sticking with the glaucoma stick woman. Its called "Help the Aged".
Also remember you 2, your bus pass doesn't work over there, so best pay, if you want to keep out of jail.
Am off to Sainsburys to get some blue potatoes now, so see what they say.
Looking forward to seeing you both soon and getting the full story. Will get the Malbec in in case you are suffering withdrawals. Michael and I are practising our tango so we can have a Geordie tango night with you!!
Take good care of yourselves and enjoy what's left.
Lots of love Glen and Miguel xxxx
